A treat for the weekend – Pastéis de Nata (Portuguese Custard Tarts)

I’ve always wanted to make Pastéis de Nata but thought they looked quite difficult but I found this recipe which was really easy and they’ve come out really well. It’s a bit of a cheat recipe as it uses ready to roll puff pastry but still tasted delicious. Give them a try!

A long established institution with locals, you’ll find them in bakeries all over Lisbon. For only a couple of euros with a strong espresso, we had a daily morning stop on our trip. With a rich custard filling infused with vanilla, cinnamon and lemon, buttery, flaky pastry and a caramelised top, it’s hard to stop at one though.

Lisbon is a fantastic city to visit with kids. The zoo and aquarium are both brilliant and it’s only a short train journey to the beaches of Cascais. The iconic yellow tram ride up to São Jorge Castle is also lots of fun. You can find out more about our top tips for visiting Lisbon as a family here.
