Day 6:
We arrived in Pluzine on a Sunday and although there were a few restaurants open, it was so quiet. Expecting Piva Lake to be a hive of activity, it was in fact a huge expanse of bright turquoise water with not a person in sight. By the afternoon, the small pebble beach had filled with local families and a few tourists. The clear waters were a welcome relief in the hot August sun and it was great fun swimming out to the jetty and jumping off. Free parking is available right next to the beach.

We decided to book a one day Tara Canyon rafting experience but with two nights’ accommodation as this worked out better with our itinerary. Set deep down in the canyon on the riverside, Waterfall Rafting Center has several comfortable cabins and a dining room serving a buffet breakfast and then a hearty lunch and dinner menu with two choices all included in the package. With internet only in the dining room, we could properly switch off and enjoy nature. With darts, table tennis and a campfire, the kids were kept entertained. With very little light pollution, the stars in the night sky were so bright.

Day 7:
As first timers to rafting, we were a little hesitant but the guides were brilliant and safety was clearly their priority – we saw a few other companies on the water and no helmets in sight. After a quick briefing and a bumpy 30 minute drive to our starting point, we enjoyed a 3 hour ride covering 18kms of rapids and pools with the most spectacular scenery. Visiting in August, the water was calm and perfect for beginners. We all said we could’ve taken a bit more action but it was still exciting. There were a few stops to swim, with several people jumping from the nearby rocks too. Deceptively inviting with clear azure waters but a temperature of around 12° C. Then back to the center for a late lunch and a relaxing afternoon. The whole experience was a highlight for all of us and definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
